Zanjeer was a Labrador retriever who trained at the Dog Training Center of the Criminal Investigation Department in Pune, India. Following his training, he was enlisted in the Mumbai Police Bonn Detection and Disposal Squad in December of 1992. During his service, Zanjeer helped to recover 11 military bombs, 57 country-made bombs, 175 petrol bombs and 600 detonators. Moreover, he assisted in detecting the bombs during the 1993 Mumbai bombings, averting three more planned attacks.
Due to his outstanding performance, Zanjeer was honoured with a full state funeral after perishing from cancer on the 16th of November, 2000.
You have to learn how to say no without you feeling like you’re being mean. Setting boundaries is how you see who does and doesn’t respect you, your time, or your emotional well-being. Anyone who sees your boundaries and thinks your being mean or tries to push that boundaries is not a person you owe your time or attention.
Dogs truly are man’s best friend. They don’t judge us or care about our circumstances or bank balance; all they ask for is love and companionship. In November of 2018, a homeless man named Cesar came to Hospital Regional Alto Vale in Brazil to receive medication for a health problem he had been battling. Shortly after his arrival, staff noticed that Cesar wasn’t alone. While Cesar may have had little belongings, he certainly wasn’t short of companionship and love.
Waiting at the door of the hospital was Cesar’s four faithful canine companions. The dogs had been living separate lives of loneliness on the streets until Cesar decided to take care of them. He told the staff that he often forgoes food for himself to make sure that his dogs have been fed. “He has the best comparisons with him,” said a hospital worker. “I do not know what his life is like, or why he’s on the streets, but I admire the respect and love he has for his little animals. If only everyone were like this.”
Lee Jong-rak is the South Korean pastor who created the “Baby Box”. The idea is that mothers who do not want their babies can leave them inside the box which includes a thick towel and lights and heating to keep the baby warm. When a baby is placed inside the box, a bell rings in Lee Jon-rak’s home which the box is attached to, and he or a member of his staff will go and collect the unwanted baby and bring them inside to his orphanage. Hundreds of babies are left abandoned at the side of the road in South Korea yearly and Jong-rak knew the perfect way to save the lives of these innocent babies. There is a sign above the drop box which reads: “Please do not abandon babies (just anywhere)… Pull the handle, and leave the baby (inside)… ” He confessed that he didn’t expect the box to be as popular as it has been. On one occasion a mother dropping her baby off explained to him that she had poison to kill herself and her baby but because of this box, she had an alternative. On another occasion, a baby was left with this heart wrenching note:
“My baby! Mom is so sorry. I am so sorry to make this decision. My son! I hope you to meet great parents, and I am very, very sorry . I don’t deserve to say a word. Sorry, sorry, and I love you my son. Mom loves you more than anything else. I leave you here because I don’t know who your father is. I used to think about something bad, but I guess this box is safer for you.That’s why I decided to leave you here. My son, Please forgive me.”
It was the 15th of November, 1977, when 13-year-old Megumi Yokota and her friend were walking home from school in Niigata, a seaside town in western Japan. As the duo approached Yokota’s home, the two said goodbye and went their separate ways. Yokota never made it home.
For the next 25 years, Yokota’s family searched in vain for her. Finally, in 2002, there was a break in the case. North Korea admitted that they had been operating a state-sponsored abduction program in which Japanese civilians had been kidnapped and brought to North Korea to teach spies Japanese language and culture so that they could successfully infiltrate the county. North Korean leader, Kim Jong Il, publicly admitted to the practice and apologised. He allowed a few abductees to return to Japan but stonewalled the rest, claiming that the victims - including Yokota - had either died or killed themselves.
Japan estimated that around 17 of its citizens had been abducted during the 1970s and 1980s. The cremated remains of eight kidnapping victims were flown back to Japan and it was claimed that one urn contained the remains of Yokota. However, DNA testing proved that the remains weren’t Yokota. Yokoto’s family believe that she is still alive today.
In 1991, Isaac Wright Jr. was wrongfully convicted of being a drug kingpin in New Jersey and sentenced to life imprisonment. While behind bars, Wright educated himself on the law and became a prison paralegal; he assisted numerous inmates with their appeals. During his own appeal process, Wright served as his own lawyer. While conducting a cross-examination, Wright was able to extract a confession of police misconduct from veteran police detective, James Dugan, who confessed to a wide and systematic misconduct and cover-up.
Wright was subsequently released from prison. He obtained an undergraduate degree, graduated from St. Thomas University School of Law, passed the New Jersey Bar and was then granted admission to the bar. With his new status as a lawyer, Wright went after the men involved in the misconduct and cover-up. Dugan pleaded guilty to official misconduct and evaded prison time. The judge, Michael Imbriani was removed from the bench and sentenced to prison on theft charges. Somerset County Prosecutor committed suicide after authorities attempted to arrest him.
The Banda District of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India is marked by a deeply patriarchal culture, rife with domestic violence, child marriages and dowry demands. According to government statistics, a woman is abducted every 10 minutes and one is raped every 20 minutes in India. As a result of this evident misogyny, Sampat Pal Devi developed the “Gulabi Gang.” They work together for justice for oppressed and abused women. They wear pink and carry a bamboo stick to use as a weapon if necessary. “I don’t advocate violence, but there are times when that is the only way to fight. These are people for whom words and arguments are not enough,” Devi said.
